I know how money is made. Tens of millions, hundreds of millions, billions. I’ve studied it. And even made a little myself.
The world of money making used to mystify me. Now I get it. And frankly, the topic is starting to even bore me!
Politics on the other hand? I don’t get it. I wanna understand that. It’s exciting. The pursuit of power, shaping the world to how you think it should be, helping others. That’s some intoxicating, romantic, adventurous stuff right there. Now, I don’t think I’ll ever work in that field, it still interests me how it all comes to be. How some Joe Schmo morphs his way into a decision makin, power havin, dignified person in charge.
I recently moved to a small town of 30,000 people in Connecticut. Two weeks ago I emailed the town mayor asking to meet. I have no agenda, I said. “I just want to say hey. I’ve previously built and sold some startups and have a large tech audience and maybe I can convince a few others like me to move here.” Sure, she said, let’s meet.
Her name’s Jennifer Tooker. She’s a very nice woman. My town is made up of mostly Democrats. She’s just right of center Republican. So I asked her how that came to be. And what her aspirations are.
I said a few dumb things to her. She thought it was funny, thank god. When she asked how living in town has been I said “Hey, its great. This town is fantastic. It’s so awesome, even a dummy can run it.!” She understood the compliment, thankfully ha.
Anyway, I’m eager to get to know her and watch her journey. If she does end up some big shot, I want to watch her journey and to see if first hand. This stuff interests me!
A bunch of cities are getting creative with ways to bring brilliant people in. Take Detroit, for example—they’ve got all these grants and programs to help startups get going. It’s like they’re throwing out the red carpet for new ideas and fresh energy to stir things up.
Do you think she would be open to something like that?
