10% to 15% bodyfat — here’s what it looks like

I track my bodyweight and body fat like crazy using an InBody machine.

I do it because I enjoy manipulating my body, doing different athletic challenges, and because, like many men, I’m incredibly vain and like to look good (and am never satisfied).

I’ve been doing this for three or four years. A few things I’ve learned along the way:

  • I use the Inbody. Its not THAT accurate. Directionally its great, but compared to Dexa, its not as good. Maybe add 1-2% to each number and that’s the real bodyfat %.
  • Some people get to 10% or below. That’s insane. I feel crappy just at 11%.
  • I don’t care about any of the numbers, more so how I feel, then how I look, and then which direction the numbers are going.
  • You can use the same machine twice in a day and get readings that are 1% different on the bodyfat scale.
  • Most people who say they’re sub 15%, I bet, are not.
  • Most high performance athletes, I bet, are in the 12% range. That’s when I feel like an animal. So much energy and strong as hell.
  • In 2022, when I was 200 pounds, I benched 325 and back squatted 420. That was my most strong.
  • I feel best at 198 pounds, 12%.
  • I had a baby in late 2023. I eased up on the weight lifting and barely walked, so I got chubby.
  • I did a big creatine load in 2024, so I got big.
  • I’m the fattest, heaviest I’ve been since 2021. Writing this it motivating me.
  • One of the reasons I got fat: I got into distance running.
  • The times I looked the most ripped: I just lifted heavy 4 days a week and walked a lot.
  • The times I’m chubbiest: I did lots of endurance, cardio stuff.
  • Tans make you looked ripped.
  • Yes, I’m posting shirtless pictures on the internet. Mocking me is fair game. Yes, I look silly in many of the pics. But many men wonder what different % look like. So, I’m helping them.
  • Getting muscle makes you feel great. Getting ripped is done in the kitchen.
  • I felt horrible at 193. I felt tiny.
  • I gained a ton of weight (mostly muscle) after using creatine. I use Create.
  • My wife says I look the same in every pic. Or, at least, she doesn’t care at all. Most women don’t ha.
  • I use MyBodyTutor for a nutritionist. Its great. Tell them Sam sent you and I get $50.
  • Getting fit is hard. Staying fit(ish) is easier. But…getting fat, unfortunately, is much easier than getting fit is easy. Does that make sense?
  • FYI I’m 6’1.5
Thanks Neville for making this!

  1. Great post. I love the continuity that filters out some noise and gets close to your truth.
Between this and your friend-collecting, you’re motivating me to open up more.
    Cheers!

  2. I’m actually fascinated by my reaction being that you look more or less the same to me in every pic
